Course Description
In this course, you will learn how early literacy develops in young children and what adults can do to help children develop confidence and excitement about language and literacy. Research findings and key concepts are presented through multimedia experiences including videos, animation, personal reflection, and plans for action. This course is designed for parents and caregivers of children from birth to age six.

Lesson 2: Early experiences and brain development
How experiences shape children’s learning and development from the day they are born; why nurturing relationships with adults are important for language and literacy learning
Lesson 3: Conversations with kids
What makes really good conversations with kids; ways to make conversations interesting, educational, and fun for adults and children
Lesson 4: Reading with a young child
Choosing great books for young children; sharing books in ways that provide enjoyment for both adults and children
Lesson 5: Young children’s writing and drawing
Supporting children’s early writing and drawing by providing appropriate materials and motivating experiences
Lesson 6: Supporting children’s pretend play
Play, play, play: How to “make-believe” with kids in ways that help them grow in language, literacy, and social-emotional well-being
